4. Organize your materials into file folders. Create folders to help you sort and store your work
samples. Create a file for each skill area selected in Step 2 and label it accordingly. You should
also create files for any additional tabbed areas you want to put in your portfolio.
Now physically collect and sort your work samples into the files.
8B: Creating Overview Cards for Work Samples – 2 hours
Each item in your career portfolio should have an overview card that gives a summary of the
sample. You should be able to hand your portfolio to another person and they should be able to
understand what each sample is and why it is in your portfolio. The overview cards are small, (the

Instructions:
1. Create an overview card for each work sample in your portfolio. You can use sheets of blank
business cards (10 to a page) to print information about each sample in your portfolio. Include a
card for every sample. If you have a sample longer than one page create only one card for the
whole project.
See Step 4, Assembling Your Career Portfolio, in Creating Your Career Portfolio At-A-Glance
Guide for Students, 4 Ed. for more details.
th
Each overview card should include certain details about the work sample:
Title
Purpose of the sample
Date developed
If it was a group effort, include the names of the people who were involved
List the skills shown by the sample in keyword format—
2. For now, use a paper clip to attach the card to each work sample in your file. When you
assemble your portfolio, you will put all your documents into sheet protectors. You will drop
the card in front of each work sample.
