Ask the class what they think of when they hear the word DISCIPLINE.
• Probably their feeling is negative, or something that involves conflict.
Ask the class what they think of when they hear the phrase SELF-DISCIPLINE.
• Probably a slightly better feeling – something you do to control
yourself, take charge of your own situation, you have power over
yourself.
Ask the class what they think of when they hear PUNISHMENT. Compare
that to the word CONSEQUENCES. Which do they like better?
DISCIPLINE is teaching kids to obey a set of rules for ways to behave.
PUNISHMENT is one way we use to correct behavior that doesn’t follow the
rules.
Have them take that definition of DISCIPLINE and apply it to their kids. They
are teaching their kids how to behave and learn to self-manage themselves as
adults.
