#1 – LIFE WITH KIDS

           Teaching Tips
 Use the exercises in the pamphlet for a group discussion and review of the key concepts.

 Discuss as a group the differences between things you control in your life and things you
don’t. Use this discussion to reinforce taking responsibility for your own actions.

 Introduce the main features that will be presented in the IM for each pamphlet.
              • Age Matters – How the abilities and needs of kids change based on their age. What’s
important at each age in relation to the pamphlet topic.

              • Parenting at a Distance - Your responsibilities as a non-custodial parent – how to stay
involved, get along with the other parent, and find ways to put the child first.
              • Taking Responsibility- Taking a realistic look at what you can control and you cannot
control in your life related to this topic. Sometimes it’s not your fault, other times you
have to take responsibility for the choices you make in your life.

              • What About Me? - Dealing with anger and helping parents find ways to balance their
own needs with the needs of their kids.
              • Try This At Home – This is an activity related to the pamphlet theme that you can do at
home with your kids to get them involved, and practice good parenting skills. Take
                                   For Evaluation Only
some time during the next meeting to overview how the activity went and what they
                 learned.
              • Personal Parenting Rules / Action Goal – At the end of each pamphlet the parent will
create a personal “rule to live by,” something that they connected with in each
pamphlet. It’s a reminder to themselves about their role as a parent, how they can do a
better job. The action goal should be one thing they want to improve about their
parenting related to the theme of the pamphlet.

 Some slides and pamphlets will have different information specifically geared to fathers
or mothers. If you have a co-ed group, review both pieces of information and expect some
discussion about the differences. For same sex groups, you should still review the
information for the other parent, talking about the differences and how that can impact
               their situation.
