Alternative Exercise: Crisis Management on Campus –

               Problem solving your way through a campus crisis

               Take one of the following scenarios and have your students problem solve
               their way through cause and effect to problem and solutions. You can break
               up into small groups and give each group a different problem to solve. Then,
               have them compile a list of problems and solutions on the class website.



               1.  You’re eight weeks into the semester and you’ve run out of money. You’ve borrowed
                   from friends, and you’re feeling panicked. Mom and Dad have made it clear you are in
                   charge of your money and they aren’t there to give handouts.

               2.  It’s week two, you’ve got 100 pages to read total from 3 different classes, plus a speech
                   due in a week. You’re feeling overwhelmed.

               3.  It’s week four – you feel behind in every subject, you failed your last test, and your
                   roommate is staying up all hours. You can’t concentrate, and you just want to sleep.

               4.  You hate your economics professor. You’re used to getting A’s and he gave you a C on
                   your last paper. You want to change sessions, but there’s nothings available that fits
                   your schedule.

               5.  You need to study for a big test, but you really need a break and want to go out with
                   friends on the weekend. This test could be the difference between a B or a D in the
                   class. Your friends are pressuring you to go out.

               6.  You’ve got a member of your study group who just isn’t contributing and wants you to
                   just give her your notes.


               7.  You feel like you don’t have any close friends and you’re watching everything from the
                   sidelines. Your roommate is ok, but he has old friends from high school that he buddies
                   around with. You feel like just another body in class.

               8.  You woke up this morning and feel terrible – Diarrhea, headache, stomach upset, and
                   this weird rash on your chest. You’ve got a test this morning and a group presentation
                   this afternoon… Auuuggh!
