In the last exercise you took a detailed look at all your skills, abilities, and the experiences that have

gotten you to this point in your life. In this exercise you’re going to take a step back and look at
your career and your life from a distance. This is the big picture versus the zoom shot. Some of the
questions you’ll be asking yourself are:

Is this the right career for me?
Is this a career that has opportunity to grow and advance, or will I be stuck at a certain
point?
Is the economy going to impact my job?
Do I need more training to get where I want to be?
Do I have the support I need at home to make this job work?
Can I do this job anywhere or only in certain places?
A SWOT analysis is a method of looking at the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats
of a certain situation. In this case, you’ll be looking at your career.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths and weaknesses are things you control in your life. Your strengths develop when you put
your energy into certain areas of your life. Your weaknesses are areas where you know you are not
as strong, but you could improve and change if you really want to. Keep in mind, these are personal
to you. One person’s strength may be another person’s weakness.
