Opportunities and Threats
Opportunities and threats are things in your life you can’t control that can help or hurt you. For
example, let’s say you want to go to the beach. The TV says the weather will be warm and sunny all
week. This seems like the perfect opportunity to hang out at the beach. You can’t control the
weather, but you can take advantage of it and have a great day.
A threat is something that could take away from a good experience. Let’s say you have tickets to an
outdoor concert. If it starts raining halfway through, they can consider it finished and not refund
any money on the tickets. It’s looking like it might rain tonight. The weather in this situation would
be a threat.
The key thing with opportunities and threats is that you can’t control them. Here are some
examples of opportunities and threats in a career:

Instructions:
1. Look at your career choice and list your current strengths and weaknesses on each form.
Remember, you can control strengths and weaknesses.
2. Complete the forms for the opportunities and threats you may come up against in your
career. These are things you can’t control.
3. Finally, go through the lists and rank each item from the most important to the least
important. List the top three from each form on the last page of the exercise. You will use
this list to help you to plan for the skills you need in the next exercise.
