Taking Responsibility

 Have parents talk about the challenges they have communicating with
their kids on a daily basis.

What are some of the key trends?
 Angry at lack of respect

 Lack of willingness to do what’s asked
 Kids won’t communicate – What did you do today? – “Nothing.”
 Lack of time – to spend with kids

 Time spent is maintenance vs. time to have fun
 Feel guilty that we don’t have more time, so I give in to what the kids want

Review the slide and have parents identify what things in their day related
to communication they can control, and what they can’t control. Use the
Parenting Worksheet to list what you can control and what you can’t
control.

It’s all about learning to control what you can and dealing with the things you
can’t.
