#4 – TALKING AND CONNECTING WITH KIDS

             Teaching Tips

 Emphasize in this session the importance of talking, listening, spending time, and
developing a trusting, respectful relationship with their children.

 Role-Play Activity: The main activity in this pamphlet is a role-play where parents break
into groups of 3-4 and act out a parent/child communication issue personal to each parent.
Depending on the size of the class, you may want to break into larger groups and have
                 more parents observing the interaction.
o Option: Instead of breaking up into groups, you might poll the class for the major
kinds of conflicts they are having with their children and take two examples that
reflect common issues of these parents. Then, stage the role-play with most of the
class observing. Have different people looking for specific behaviors from the list on
the worksheet, and then review. Stage the role play again, having parents try better
                        behaviors to impact the situation.

 When developing the Family Rules for Communicating – have the class break up into
groups of 3-5 so they can help each other brainstorm rules- it will go much faster than
                 having parents develop them separately.
