Slide 9 – What’s the Real Issue? – Violence and Bullying

Review the slide for ways to help kids who are aggressive change their
behavior.
The right side of the slide gives suggestions for helping kids deal with or
avoid bullying situations.
There are two types of aggressive kids - proactive and reactive.
Proactive – child starts something in order to obtain a specific outcome
Planned, unemotional, focused on a goal (such as peer approval, the
victim submitting, status in a gang, some type of control)
Reactive – child responds with aggression to perceived threats
Emotional, often based on perceived threats (a bump, a look from another
student, taunts) – often from kids who are struggling emotionally or
mentally
