               Self-Harm For Evaluation Only
 Cutting – injuring yourself on purpose with scratches or cuts on your
body. May self-inure by burning their skin with a cigarette or match – then
                   they try to hide it.
                   Why?
o They feel it is a way of dealing with the pain of strong emotions,
pressures, relationship problems, or feeling they can’t cope or
change their situation. It’s a way of feeling in control.
o It can also be a way of feeling, or waking up after an emotionally
                          numbing experience or trauma.
o Cutting can be habit forming – your body gets a false sense of relief

after cutting, and you feel a need to do it again the next time you
                          feel bad.
o Can be linked to issues with depression, eating disorders, obsessive
or compulsive behaviors, and substance abuse
Treatment – Kids who cut need help working through the issues that are
causing the emotions and feelings. A counselor can help give them other
                    ways to cope with stresses.
