SECTION 6 – References
Instructions:
Most references are not checked until a person has had an interview and is being considered for
the job. Many people choose to put the statement “References available on request” on the
bottom of their résumé. Pull this information from the job application in Exercise 3.
A reference can be used to comment on you personally and professionally and to prove a skill or
ability you may have. Employers, teachers, clergy, and supervisors on volunteer projects can serve
as good references. It is a good idea to keep a short letter from all your references with your

portfolio. Be sure to include all your references’ contact information, how you know them, and why
or what type of reference they are. Use the What you’d like them to tell others about you section
as a checklist to ensure they have included everything you need them to in a letter.
