Keywords (Professional descriptors) Think about the words that describe who you are and what
you can do. You will want to use these keywords throughout your profile to help people
understand you. Use no more than two words to a phrase. You can find keywords by searching job
titles on O*Net (www.onetonline.org), look at project titles from your classes, ethnic specialties,
languages spoken, research areas, specific skills you have in your degree area, related fields,
technology, software competencies, etc.

2. List Every Job –Demonstrate Transferable Skills
Recruiters often search for people who have worked at a particular company in the past and if you
don’t include that company in your career history, they won’t find you. Likewise, LinkedIn™ allows
people to search for former colleagues (which it does by looking for employer names). If you don’t
list all your employers, you’re missing the chance to reconnect with a lot of people. List every
position you have held. Also, be sure to list all associations and certifications because recruiters
may choose to search by these rather than by employer.
Being a student is a job, so focus on your program and specialties….
